As a Licensed Massage Therapist for over 18 years, I'm proud to announce my main focus is practicing the John Barnes myofascial release approach (MFR).
What is fascia? Fascia is a spider web-looking connective tissue network that spans everywhere in your body, head to toe, even down at the cellular level. There is no place in your body where fascia is not and it's the only system in your body that interacts with ALL of your other systems. Thus, many problems can be caused by constricted, torqued fascia resulting in symptoms that may surface far away from the actual constriction. Problems such as chronic pain, TMJD, migraines, neck and back issue, limited range of motion, etc. You name it and torqued fascia is likely the culprit behind it.
Overuse and physical and emotional trauma can torque fascia around pain-sensitive structures and with a tensile strength of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch, fascia causes pain ranging from annoying to debilitating.
Unfortunately, these torques cannot be seen on any medical imaging or tests so there's a large percentage of people who are suffering from pain that may originate in the fascial system but go undiagnosed or even misdiagnosed.
What is myofascial release? MFR considers the whole person, not just the symptom. It is a safe and gentle application of sustained pressure, stretch & awareness into restricted areas of your body to enable the body to release the restrictions, begin to "unravel" and relax and possibly release the trapped energy of trauma, emotions and repressed memories. Often times the energy alone from emotions and repressed memories can be the source of torques in the body.
Myofascial release isn't new and it's not the latest "fad." What's so special about the John Barnes approach to MFR? Traditional MFR will hold the stretch on restrictions until a release is experienced, about 30-60 seconds. But this is release is only the elastin component of fascia, which is only about 20% of the makeup of the fascial system. The layer of fascia that John Barnes focuses on is the collagenous barrier where the restrictions originate. But the collagenous barrier needs to be given enough time to release; stretches are held at least 5 minutes most often longer. This deep release of the fascia is what results in long-term relief from pain and limited range of motion.
John's techniques are the result of over 50 years focusing on all aspects of the fascial system. Beginning with his own serious back injuries when he was in his 20s, John has learned it is a vital system in the body that needs to be worked with, i.e. it cannot be forced. Time and patience both in and out of the treatment room allow your body to release, adjust and heal at it's own, optimal rate, greatly supported by your ongoing mfr sessions.
MFR is not a "one and done" type of treatment as the premise is to unwind the restrictions to give you long-lasting, even permanent relief. And likely those restrictions accumulated over years, even decades. So you need to consider your goals. Are they to reduce pain, increase mobility in a joint, release you from the "straight jacket" under your skin? Do your goals include resuming activities you loved doing but have tapered off-or stopped altogether-because of the pain? Does your discomfort affect your interactions with your family, friends, co-workers..?
Are you tired of getting up to use the toilet multiple times throughout the night? Been told your bladder (men, this includes you) and/or uterus are "falling out?" Experience painful menstrual cycles, painful intercourse, fibroid cysts, endometriosis? MFR can be helpful with these issues as well.
The purpose of your life is to ENJOY your life. There's no extra credit for unnecessarily enduring pain and having it limit what you can do. Start your road to authentic healing by scheduling your appointment today.
